part 1. Getting to the table: When other people say you don't belong at the table, ask them to explain why ; When people say there's no room at the table, don't believe them ; Getting a place at one table will help you get a place at another ; Understand how a seat at the table is acquired : some seats are earned, some are inherited, some are awarded or given away, some are purchased, and some need to be fought for and won ; Always plan at least two different routes to the table : three routes are still better ; No one gets to the table without the assistance of others : be willing to accept help... and ask for it ; Assemble a posse of advocates who will help you get to the table ; If your advocates can't or won't help you get to the table, look for new advocates ; When necessary, turn your opponents into advocates ; Sometimes the fastest route to the table is asking the right questions ; Anticipate the ways in which people may try to keep you away from the table, then outthink and outplan them ; Be wary when you're invited to sit [at] a table that doesn't interest you, be warier still when people pressure or encourage you to sit there ; Remember that your time and opportunities for getting a place at the table are limited ; Sometimes the best thing to do is build your own table -- part 2. Once you're at the table: Listen respectfully at the table, debate or challenge them if necessary... but never ignore them ; Use your place at the table to help others... but carefully choose whom to help and how you help them ; To get to the table, stay there, and do the most good while you're there, recruit both an advocate and a protector ; Invite others to the table and help them get there... even if some people at the table disapprove ; When new people join the table, welcome them, even if they're not people you wanted or planned to work with ; No matter how crowded or noisy the table gets, don't try to force people out, instead, find ways to make the table bigger ; If you have the opportunity and the skills, bring everyone at the table together into a team ; Don't let fear drive you from the table : accept the fear, but don't flee ; When fear threatens to drive others from the table, help them stay ; When others already at the table need your help, offer it... but don't force it on them ; When other people who belong at the table won't come to it, insist that they do ; When someone at the table tells people that they don't belong, challenge and educate them ; When someone at the table tells you that you don't belong, get everyone's attention... and educate them ; When you need to solve a problem, call to the table people with the necessary skills, don't just call people with good intentions ; Never forget the people who helped you get to the table ; Always remember that service is part of the price of being at the table ; Sometimes it's much harder to stay at the table than it is to get to it ; Never take your place at the table for granted -- part 3. Leaving the table: Think twice about leaving the table when someone needs you at it ; If you realize you're at the wrong table, find a new one ; If other people force you away from the table, find a new one ; Sometimes leaving the table can be a strategic step toward a place at another, more desirable table ; If you choose to leave the table, be clear and honest with yourself about why, if you choose to stay, be equally clear and honest with yourself about your reasons ; When someone else has to leave the table, help them leave graciously and with dignity -- Afterword: Your place at the table awaits.
