Getting to the table: When other people say you don't belong at the table, ask them to explain why ; When people say there's no room at the table, don't believe them ; Getting a place at one table will help you get a place at another ; Understand how a seat at the table is acquired : some seats are earned, some are inherited, some are awarded or given away, some are purchased, and some need to be fought for and won ; Always plan at least two different routes to the table : three routes are still better ; No one gets to the table without the assistance of others : be willing to accept help... and ask for it ; Assemble a posse of advocates who will help you get to the table ; If your advocates can't or won't help you get to the table, look for new advocates ; When necessary, turn your opponents into advocates ; Sometimes the fastest route to the table is asking the right questions ; Anticipate the ways in which people may try to keep you away from the table, then outthink and outplan them ; Be wary when you're invited to sit [at] a table that doesn't interest you, be warier still when people pressure or encourage you to sit there ; Remember that your time and opportunities for getting a place at the table are limited ; Sometimes the best thing to do is build your own table -- part 2.
