Managing dementia in the geriatric population can present significant challenges. At the project site, there was no non-pharmacological agitation management for dementia, so an evidence-based solution was sought. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine if the implementation of American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) guidelines, Appendix C Music Listening Frequency and Delivery, would impact agitation among admitted dementia patients. The project was piloted over eight weeks in an urban California nursing home. Sister Callista Roy's adaptation theory and Edward Demings's plan-do-study-act (PDSA) model provided the scientific underpinnings for the project. Data were extracted from the electronic health records of 52 patients measured at baseline and post-implementation. A Wilcoxon Signed Rank test showed a statistically significant impact on agitation between baseline and post-implementation [Z (N = 52) = -5.84, p = .000]. Clinical significance was demonstrated by patients with one or more episodes of agitation a week, which decreased by 33%, and 17 patients had less agitation. Based on the results, implementing individualized music listening using the AMTA guidelines may impact the agitation of dementia patients. Recommendations include increasing staff participation to improve sustainability at the project site and disseminating the results.
