Introduction: Visual thinking strategies (VTS) is an evidenced-based method founded on the principles of observation and discussion that uses art and art interpretation to help teach and improve visual literacy, critical thinking and communication skills. When applied within the field of medicine, VTS has been shown to help increase radiographic interpretation skills, decrease clinician burn-out and improve clinician-patient relationships. No studies applying VTS to dentistry have been published to date. Methods: Participants from Saint Louis University's Center for Advanced Dental Education completed a pre-examination, attended a VTS seminar using critically acclaimed artworks, and took a post-examination four weeks later. Data collected included time to first click, total clicks, and accuracy in identifying findings. Results: Residents who completed the VTS training will average 0.215 (t = 3.292, p = .005, df = 16, CI = (0.0076, 0.353)) more findings per image after training than before training. This result was statistically significant compared to pre-test results. There was no statistically significant difference between residents who participated in the VTS seminar compared to those who did not. Conclusions: Visual Thinking Strategies offer the potential to help improve diagnostic abilities and increase resident's ability to identify clinically relevant radiographic findings.
